I had seen these prints once before when searching the Forum
archives, but seeing them in this context was really moving. You all

I've been thinking (yes, I know, I know, EVERYONE hates it when that
happens) about the next Baren get together and then I went to this most
inspiring place for a 2-week residency:

The nearby town of Beatty, Nevada has all the comforts of any rural town
anywhere, plenty of cheap accommodations, dining, and yes yes, phone and
internet just like the best of 'em. Well, it is rural Nevada, but also a
major travel route from Las Vegas to Reno, our biggest two cities AND one of
the gateways to Death Valley National Park.

To add to the Gum Arabic discussion, the one I use is liquid and comes from the Winsor and Newton Watercolour range. It is called simply Gum Arabic and the label says: Increases brilliancy, gloss and transparency of water colours Controls spread of wet on wet Reduces staining Gum arabic/preservatives/water.

I use it sometimes to get some shine. I also use it as a glue when adding mica or other metallic flakes etc. This leads me to my question... I would like to add very fine mica to a part of my print. I have always used a cut out stencil shape to do this, and I note that David suggests this when describing mica printing in his encyclopedia, (using an image of a dragon fly as his example), although he did not actually demonstrate it. Would using the stencil method be considered acceptable to the rules for Exchange 39? The image is of course, otherwise created using woodblocks, including the base colour prior to adding the mica.

Thank you for the comments re carrying woodworking tools on to a plane. Even in the hold luggage the chances of having ones beautiful tools taken away seems just too great. Both UK and USA are regularly in a state of high alert, and I would not like to lose them. Nor do I really trust the post too much. Perhaps I should get a student set and put them in the hold luggage, so would not be so upset at losing them. My husband had a favourite bottle opener taken once by the airport on a journey to Spain.

I loved Maria's photos of the workshop, everyone looks very cold tho. Hope you are planning for a bit warmer timing for us.

Hi, all - To add metallic color to my prints, I simply print a base color and before it dries dust on with a salt shaker an appropriate metallic powder. I wait till it dries (depends on the humidity) and gently brush it off. I have experimented with Gold Leaf and Metallic Powders from Pearl Art Supplies and Pearl Ex Pigments from Jacquard Products. Very convenient and has the right viscosity for anything I have done.

When I use Mica I mix it into the pigment that I am printing... and
print in the normal fashion.
It is difficult to get enough mica so that it sparkles to any extent.
Mixing it in just with Gum Arabic does a better job and this can be
applied as a second layer over an existing colour in the moku hanga
method.

You can rest assured that you will not lose them... They are not
looking for knives and chisels. They are looking for undeclared guns
and explosives (sniffer dogs). If you can check luggage that
contains Scissors, pocket knives, and carpenter tools and like
electric saws, drills they go throught without any trouble... I cannot
understand why a little set of your tools would be confiscated...
hardly a national threat.

Are you telling us that the bottle opener was in the baggage that was
checked and in the hold of the airplane. !!!!!

Twice I forgot to take my little Swiss Army Knife out of my pocket and
put it in my luggage.... They caught it and I had a choice.....
Relinquish it or mails to myself. I choose the second alternative...

Did you do this using waterbase pigments? I would think that there is
not enough “stickiness” with it. Oil base no problem.
