Yes my studio space is very elegant. My husband designed it and he is
a perfectionist. It will also serve as a gallery, (we get a lot of
tourism) I will be trying to keep it tidy. We also sold the huge
drafting, it was too large for the space. I kept an antique round oak
table and there are porches with table space. We use that table for
dining so we can sit and enjoy the view, that room has the best so
far. We can have friends in to dine in the space as well as have it
for a studio, so in a way it has a dual purpose. Originally it was
just to be my studio, but it is too fine a space not to use it other
ways as well.

Yesterday we had a rain day here, we get them once or twice during the
winter months here in Baja. I work outside here, no studio. So, I
went to the art store to scope out paper for the next exchange. They
have the most gorgeous paper. I couldn't resist and spent the wad.
We printmakers sure get hooked on papers and I wanted a nice paper for
this next exchange print, it makes such a difference. Yes, I am
learning it is worth the extra pennies to have good paper, ink and
tools. Besides, we are making a killing on the dollar to peso
exchange rate, a good excuse to buy the spendier stuff!!!!! I do not
know the name of this paper or if it is acid free, but it is
delicious, creamy and has 4 deckled edges. The size was so perfect I
could hardly believe my luck, I will get 4 prints per sheet. Next
visit I will corner the owner and use my splanglish to try and find
out what I bought, HA! Nothing like putting the cart before the horse.

Cheers from Baja,
Marilynn

Benny...

I'm not in Puerto Rico until after the 20th so haven't seen my exchange pieces nor know if you ever got my colophon info. I'll notify Maria when I'm back if things are not right.

I have a confession to make. I just did it again ... I just signed up for the Year of the Ox exchange.

More confession: I also signed up for the Year of the Boar and the Year of the Rat. But you do not yet have your Boar and your Rat from me. The blocks are carved, but have never been printed. The reasons are somewhat obscure, and of no real interest to you.

Soooo, if you do not want to send me your Ox, I will understand. I am not keeping score. I will promise that all my Boars and all my Rats AND my Oxs will be printed and mailed this year ... promise. I apologize to everyone for this total slackness on my part.

Cheers ........ Charles

Bravo Charles! I have to also confess to slakness (or, still worse,
laziness) in that all my rats/mice didn't get done --just too much to do and
they became rather complicated to print - I've cut blocks for the Year of
the Ox and they're even more tedious to print (moku hanga with many
layers!?) but swear I will persist.............

I had to print '08's cards in batches and now have lost track of who's
missing them - could people who'd like to receive them please let me
know......I think all the Boars finally got out..

BTW, Ray Hudson, your rat singing under the moonlight is wonderful as is
AEleen Frisch's
Cat & Mouse....both recently received and congrats to Jean Womack for
sending out the 1st OX of '09!

Best wishes to all for the New Year (and I shall attempt to work harder at
completeing committments)
Louise

Annie, nice print once more
http://woodblockdreams.blogspot.com/2009/01/they-looked-behind-final.html .
Would love to hear your system for keeping paper that large dampened
throughout the long multi-layered process you use? Any tips for a "dry" gal
like me?

Anyone else that has printed in very dry climate?

I should think that this close to New Year‘s that drying out would be
a welcome option... (o

Maria, would not a humidifier work for your studio for
printing?

Perhaps if you closed off a small printing area with
vinyl/plastic sheeting and used a humidifier within,
your air-conditioning would still keep the area
relatively cool while allowing you to work comfortably
in this purpose built 'moist zone'.

The humidity out here is 4-12% on average.
Two humidifiers in the bedroom for my husband's allergies run all day and
night and can keep his side of the room at about 35%. A small enclosed area
might work, though. I wonder what the cats would think of me enclosed in a
plastic "room".

I think I will try a flat Tupperware container with compartments, akin to
Graham's humido-box; never thought about compartments before. I've printed
moku-hanga before, but had the stroke of luck of having a storm last time
and the time before that the print was very small and a couple of plastic
bags did the trick. This time I'm printing Exchange #39 which is a bit
larger, whoever decided that stupid size for a moku-hanga print ought to be
shot, oh wait, that was me...never mind...

My guitar case stays at a nice 45% so maybe I'll just crawl in there.

Benny,

Got the exchange ..... read the colophon and is fine except for the transposing of a couple of words.... my mistake, I'm ways doing this and should remember to triple check. Haven't looked at the exchange though.... am saving that for savoring with my Monday art group.

Thank you for coordinating ... it's mostly fun but the waiting can wear you down if you let it.

Hello All

My Name is Peter McLean and I have joined Baren recently.  I currently live in Canberra Australia where I am a student at the ANU School of Art in the Printmedia and Drawing workshop - entering my forth and final year.  I work with a range of print methods, including woodblock, as well as doing other non print things.  I have been making prints for quite a while now - 15 years or so.  I recognise some names here from when I was on the Print Australia list some years back - and I have some of your prints from doing a few exchanges there.  I recently started working part-time at an open access print workshop here called Megalo which is great because I get paid and get to hang around presses and prints and printmakers at the same time.

I do have a blog but I warn you it is mostly not directly about printmaking stuff (but sometimes is).
Looking forward to more involvement,
pete

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Please excuse my reply on the whole list
but I'm having a hard time emailing privately off the list (Outlook keeps
losing the gmail account settings...I'll figure it out later.)

Excellent ideas for heating my studio, Benny - thank you. When my parents'
boat was in Connecticut they used to have it wrapped in clear plastic
sheeting for the winters. It was cost prohibitive to get the material from a
marine supply co. I had written that solution off. I never thought of
checking a fabric shop. My local fabric store is out but they'll get a new
shipment later this week. In the mean time I might check the hardware store
for another alternative. It's cold out there and I'm fairly impatient.

I bought a heater a few days ago and the salesman told me the oil filled
radiator worked well but only if you have steady air circulation between the
coils. I was at a hardware store not a big box place and was inclined to
believe him. Online the reviews are mixed. It sounds like Benny has had good
luck with a radiator. Has anyone else? Is there some secret to making it
work effectively? A small draft between the coils perhaps? I have a ceiling
fan that I could run on low but obviously that wouldn't directly help air
flow between the coils.

I'm fighting - and losing - a battle with ink hickies because of the exposed
nature of my studio space. It's very difficult to keep my work area dust
free so radiated or ceramic heat would be great if I didn't have to blow my
dirty air around. Woodcraft sells a small, inexpensive ShopVac air cleaner (
http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?FamilyID=4303) Do any of you use a dust
collection system? All my studio supplies come from my "hat pin money" so
cheap but effective is the name of the game.

Thanks again - I'm usually the first to admit that I have no idea what I'm
doing most of the time so advice is always welcome.
