I wonder who labeled this as Extraordinaire....?

Not really.... it is the way they use to print garment and drapery
materials when my dad was a kid.... We were taught to do this art
school away back when .... well that remains for me to know and you to
figure out.

Gettting back to the question of cohesive art--
2 cents:
If you work in a series it is bound to be cohesive.
Work in a theme-- --sky, feet, similar colors, whimsy,
caricatures---anything that interests you.
Tweak a favorite piece of your art that you like . Keep doing something
a little different to it.
If you have a particular technique that works for you, experiment and
repeat it.
One idea will feed into another.
Keep enjoying it.. Sooner of later you will see that what you do has your
special look. It's like your signature in that it happens.

(This is not to cast aspersions on any group, but this discussion just
brought to mind this funny quote--
I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.

Goodness, to tell someone their work had no soul does not seem
appropriate. I once had a painting professor that told me I would
never be able to draw, he had never seen any of my drawings. At the
same critique he told another student that she would never be able to
do interpretive work. We both switched to the other senior painting
instructor and thrived. She created a very interpretive piece and I
started doing memory imagination paintings that became a strong part
of all my work. I think critiques should give guidance and
constructive criticism. Perhaps you had gotten a bit tight trying
hard to present just what you thought they wanted and they should have
said, you need to loosen up a bit and enjoy your work and follow your
heart. That would put soul into the work with ease. Critiquing work
is a sensitive area and one needs to guide the artist not put them
down. Saying this makes me think there is a balance to making cohesive
work, you explore, experiment, create and it will come together with
ease. Once you have found your unique approach it will come
naturally. I used to love to go to the beach, walk and pick
wildflowers and sit with a glass of wine for hours (never drank the
wine, ha) and draw and paint watercolors of them, it was relaxing, a
joy and in the end I had a body of work. Don't we all create because
that is what we love to do??

Thanks for the video, Julio, I enjoyed watching this master
craftsman's graceful economy of movement. A good reminder of the
quality of motion that goes into a print.
Cheers from CA's Central Coast!,

After seeing the interesting videos linked by Julio yesterday, I headed down into my storeroom to dig out something that looked familiar ...

I picked up a couple of these blocks some years back, but never got around to exploring what they were, or how they were used. But yesterday's video shows exactly what they are!

Here's a view of the pattern:

And a couple of shots of the carving ...
