Sherri, I have to agree that at times a piece of art comes along that
seems to be executed in a bit of a clumsy manner. But the creative
spark, the freshness of the work makes it art. I also agree that art
has many forms, from being beautifully uplifting to thought
provoking. As a painter I was never even considered to be a
craftsman, as a printmaker craft really does become a big part of what
I do. However, there are forms of painting that fall into craft, tole
painting, stenciling from store bought stencils, etc. I for one would
never look done on anyone who has mastered a craft well, there is room
in this world for all of us. Skill can be awe inspiring.

I was impressed with Mark Mason's view:

"Art without craft is an inarticulate loud noise. Art with craft is a
conversation. Craft without art is an empty vessel, craft with art is beauty
with a purpose."

To create a valued piece of art requires both. So instead of classifying it
as art or craft give it a ratio. 90% art and 10% craft would, in my mind,
be classified as 'artsy'. 10% art and 90% craft is 'crafty' or 'well
executed'. Ideally, if the craft part is well done and supportive, what
strikes you is the art part.

'Artful' would _not_ be negative. It just refers to having an abundant
component of art.

(My wife just observed that if a painting is too well crafted it becomes
'illustration'.)

No references to quote; Just my musings.

How about entering an exhibition with 1,000 other artists that includes
24,000 prints and will be on display at two major US cities ???
Got your attention ?

Well, it's not printmaking related but I thought interesting enough to
pass on to those of us feeling a little crafty...or is that Artsy ?
How about documenting our lives as an artist/printmaker ?

thanks....Julio

A couple of paintings, the first is an underpainting using a photo by Karin Jurick at Different Strokes. I'm doing it for one of finals in the abstract composition class. bear in mind this is an underpainting and it will change significanty before I am done... the othe is a male nude for this week's homework assignment in the abstract composition class. Yes it is done and it actually started out as a rendering and became abstract as I deconstructed it...

Subject: Birthday print giveaway
Posted by: Alynn Guerra

Today is my birthday, and the third time I give prints on this day.I already gave a bunch of them at my party on Saturday, the only thing I ask in return is a note. Apart from the fun party, food, present, dancing, etc; it's always a joy to read the notes at the end of the day, that makes the whole thing memorable. This year I created a print that had something to do with my birthday (kind of).I
