Austin has 2 great groups. We drive from San Antonio to attend the Austin Book Arts group, and several of us are members of the Women Printmakers of Austin (WPA), which is a very active and supportive group).
WPA also has members from as far away as Houston.

Bobbi...

This is a great question. I think you have to take advantage of all opportunities that present themselves. Fortunately I do not have to depend on sales of artwork to survive but I do make enough to pay quarterly taxes.

For myself, I've been selling through a local gallery (first one which closed and now another) for the last 5 years. I'm lucky enough to have a permanent print rack as well as paintings on the walls, so make a modest monthly sum from that.

I've also entered prints into local (Puerto Rico) exhibitions and, surprisingly, have not only been juried in but usually win a prize. I feel this is more the 'big fish in a small pond' phenomenon. I haven't submitted to national level shows. I have rarely made sales from the exhibitions but it has gotten me buyers at the gallery as a result of the frequent exposure.

I also have 4 days a month where I am up at the El Portal Rainforest Visitor Center, along with 5 other artists. Although we have been hurt by the recent economic downswing, I usually have pretty good sales there since it is one-on-one with the buyer and they see us working.

I have some items on Etsy and Ebay but rarely sell from there. I plan to include a shopping cart on my website soon but expect there will be few sales there also. I feel that, unless people can actually see your work, internet selling is hard. Most of my internet buyers have previously bought work from me in person. I am also very bad at updating work on those places so that is also a factor in poor internet sales.

I am also interested in what other printmakers do... I would love to branch out beyond Puerto Rico but am afraid that the distance is a problem.

I'm familiar with both of those, and re-joined the WPA group just
yesterday. It's really hard for me to get into town for meetings and
such, but will try to do so.

Hi Diane,

Thanks for the information. I've been trying to sell my other types
of artwork through my website for over 15 years now, with very little
success. I've sold a few things here and there, from Ebay, Etsy, the
site....and it did lead to one big commission, but that's about it.

Friends have told me the reason I don't have sales from my website is
that I didn't have a cart or Buy It buttons on there until very
recently. Interestingly enough, the day I put the buttons on, I sold
two small "on sale" paintings, so maybe they were right.

I agree with you about it being hard to sell prints from a website.
I've been trying for two days to scan some new monoprints, and the
scans look horrible. Even at 300 dpi, it's not picking up the
texture or colors right.

I'm mostly thinking about branching out and entering competitions,
juried shows, etc. and was hoping those might lead to direct sales.
I don't have a local gallery, but did join the women printmaker's
group in Austin, which is the nearest large town. It's hard for me
to travel there much, though, because of our schedule here.

I've been wondering about approaching fine crafts galleries.....the
ones who actually carry wall art...a lot of them don't. They seem
much more approachable than a lot of the fine art galleries I visit
around here.

Just want to let everyone ..... especially those in the Seattle area .... that I'm having a show of my woodcut prints at the

"Up Front Gallery" in Issaquah Washington. It is located on Front St. , of course. Anyway, it's up and will be up until the 1st.... closing reception on the 31st.... I hope some of you will be able to see it.
