Hello Bareners,

I noticed an article in my Google alerts this morning about a juried
print show in Michigan, and in the article is this announcement about
a prize awarded to Linda Beeman:

"The $400 Alumni Purchase Award went to Linda Beeman of Ovid, for a
Japanese woodblock print titled 'Guardian' illustrating a rock
formation against a bluish background perhaps representing water or a
snow-capped mountain range."

Here's a link to the full article:

Congratulations, Linda!

Thank you Annie, for posting the prize information about Linda Beeman.
Congrats to Linda.
I opened her site and found beautiful work and her writing was also very
enjoyable.
She had a Cairn woodblock! And another woodblock print that can take my
breath away:
Evening Sunglow
For anyone interested, I went to the Hiromi Store in LA last week and will
have to write about it next. They have a sale going on.

I have a question that my limited knowledge of print etiquette doesn't answer. As I mentioned some months ago, my brother Dale was a member of this group, and had cut one block of his New Year Ox print before he died last spring. I finally have printed both my ox and the one block he finished for his, and will be sending them out shortly. The question is, is there a "best way" for me to label/sign his print. Perhaps writing his name with my initials in parentheses, as one does with letter signatures? I would like to have his name on them. I can think of something to do, but thought there might be a precedent to follow.

Larry,
It seems to me you would write his name and say "by Larry Phelps" underneath. It would indicate you printed the blocks, but I am not sure. I have not been asked this before but I am sure there is a precedent somewhere for this, maybe there is a curator on the list.
Congrats on printing the blocks, I am sure it was hard but a labor of love
My best to you and your family

Larry

My thinking on this is that since Dale designed (and carved ) the block
his name should definitely be the main signature. Then since you are the
printer you can indicate that if you wish by adding "printed by ....."
somewhere else in the margin. This is the way some Japanese & Western
publishers go about signing the prints when more than one person is
involved in the final product.

I'll be opening up the signup page for the Year of the Tiger (2010)
exchange in the next day or so.....stay tune for an announcement.

all the best to you and your family for the Holidays and please say hello
to Dianne from everyone here at Baren......Julio

Sorry for the double post.......

Larry....

I went to the Tamarind Institute website (which of course is a hotbed for
master printers working with artists) and I found some examples...notice
the "collaborating printer..." statement.
