Not in any official way, but my favourites folder is starting to fill up
with these sites.

Here's another:

There may be other prints on this site, I haven't had chance to look yet.

Cheers,

Mark.

Thank you for this site
_http://www.b-n.nl/new_index.php?page=auction&AuctionNumber=321&GroupNumber=
63&DetailItemNumber_
(http://www.b-n.nl/new_index.php?page=auction&AuctionNumber=321&GroupNumber=63&DetailItemNumber) =Mark and others, I looked at
many of the beautiful woodblock prints on the above site and really enjoyed
them.. But this I wonder about:------ Many of these beauties look like
watercolors. Why create such labor intensive work and have it look like a
watercolor?
I am a watercolorist for many years and have been doing woodbock prints
for many years. I want woodblocks that look like what they are and not any
other technique. I feel each has its own particular look..
I like woodblocks to show their marks and wood textures, something that
is special to that method. and not to any other.
What are your thoughts about this?
Carol Lyons

Carol, I understand where you are coming from but yours (ours) is a
21st century point of view. It has only been in very recent history
that low cost colour reproduction has been available; prior to the
last ten or so years it was very, very expensive. Even as late as
1990 the cost of an 8x10 colour separation was more than I paid for
my last colour scanner and that didn't include printing! There was a
huge cost in reproducing watercolours or oils on paper and if you
look at anything printed in colour pre 1960, it wasn't very good anyway.

There was also a familiarity factor; since Thomas Bewick in the early
1800's, engravings had been the norm for illustration and advertising
images and as such they were very common place.

Since it was terribly expensive to a watercolour or oil painting and
people thought engraving to be commonplace then it made good sense to
produce prints that looked different, prints that looked like a
watercolour for instance. I imagine an engraving that looked like a
watercolour would be much more saleable than an engraving that looked
like an engraving.

So, like most things, taken in context those 'watercolour' like
engravings made a lot of sense.

I tought so... I like when a work use all potential of the technique.
I also like woodblocks to show their textures.
But they are nice to look and I love watercolors too ! :-)
