Dear Bareners,

Here is something different...... Woodblock Prints by Cressida Campbell!

She is an Australian but that is not what makes her different! She has
produced a big, big book of prints about 300 full page illustrations
and enthusiastically I bought the book.... $A130.00

But it is her technique that is different and I have never seen this
way of working before in this amount of detail..... "She begins with a
piece of plywood ( it doesn't say what type) on which a design is
carefully drawn. If the drawing is wrong, then everything goes wrong
she says: so this part of the process absorbs a great deal of time and
concentration. Next, she carves out each line with a small engraving
tool, and uses small brushes to apply watercolours (it doesn't say
what type or company) to the separate segments. After several coats of
paint, she freshens up the image with a spray of water and takes a
single impression. The end result is one coloured block, and one
print, its mirror image." Most are around the size of 44x60 cm (60cm =
2 feet).

"The actual picture may take from one week to two months to complete.
The painted block, now dry, is placed flat on a table and lightly
sprayed with water. Most of these take hours to paint with the
layering of colours and then they are "freshened" up with a spray of
water (doesn't say how much but it must be fairly fine so the colour
does not run into the next even over the "white line") A sponge
moistened sheet of Dutch Etching paper (doesn't say what company) is
placed on top of the block. Pressure is applied to the back of the
paper by hand using a small lino-roller allowing the wet paint to
penetrate the paper.

"The paper is peeled back and the block sprayed many times until the
image has fully appeared. This procedure takes from one to three
hours, the resulting print is the reverse image of the block. A
unique woodblock print is produced together with the painted woodblock
for exhibition."

I loved the textural effects of the paint it transferred to the
paper... I think that is what drew me to buy the book on the spur of
the moment. It reminds me a bit of enlarged granulated pixels on the
computer prints I did at college in eArts.

However, check out all the web pages that refer to her work at :

> 1&q=Cressida+Campbell&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

or just type in "Cressida Campbell" into Google

It makes a lovely "coffee table" book alongside my Italian Picture Book.

Enjoy,

Jan

I would consider Campbell "a water colour painter with a unique
method of tranference."
She does not make prints - as a printmaker.

Delightful stuff, however........

Stunning!
Doesn't this sound to you exactly like the Provincetown Print white line
print method?
This can be perfectly seen if you open her "Reading" print below.

I am looking forward to finding out more about the method when I take the
white line course in Cape Cod in two weeks. Keep you posted...

Ellen,
Nice print. You might think the pacific northwest with its higher
humidity is something good. It is if you are printing water based and
in no hurry for things to dry. I'm on the coast and the continual
cooler weather with the high humidity means I have to hope my prints
will dry on time for exchanges. Also there is the mold factor.

Thank you for saying "a water colour painter with a unique method of tranference." I have to agree. I guess you could call it monoprint, but that sort of goes against itself, as she could make more than one piece, if she wanted.

True, it's very similar to monoprint, but it is created with a woodblock by transfer. I like the fact that each one can be unique, or subtly different.

There's an admirable skill is making every print alike, but I think there's an equally admirable skill in making them unique.

I also purchased the book last week. I picked it up at NSW State gallery. In speaking with the sales person, I was told that Cressida suppervises all aspects of the process including choosing the paper. The paper in the book is very interesting in that it is not glossy. It works really well.I know she states that she uses watercolour, but in an demonstration that I saw on TV last year, she was using Dale and Rowley? Gouache.
She referes to them as woodblock painting. She usually sells the carved and painted blocks with the print. She gets upward of $AUS40,000.I liken her process to a slight variation on the Provincetown / white line print.

A couple of years back (message 37222) I posted a link to an online
exhibition of the Nippon Hangain, one of the 'art societies' here in
Japan. Today I received a copy of the catalogue to their 60th
exhibition, and it is full of interesting stuff.

So I went online to see if these prints are viewable, but it seems not
yet - their website still has the images from _last year's_ show. But
I realized that I never sent you _that_ link, so here it is:
http://nipponhangain.com/exhibition59th.html

(The grid of 40-odd names at the top right of the page links to each
person's work)

The people's names are all in Japanese, but you can extract their
actual name from the end of each URL ...

I have no idea if this will be staying online, as the current show has
just ended, and presumably will be going online shortly, perhaps
replacing this page.

Do you know if picture catalogs are available?

There's no mention of that on their website, and the catalogue I have
here (300 or so images) has neither price nor ordering information. So
I would guess that it was just distributed to members, etc. (I got
mine from brush maker Miyagawa-san when I dropped in to visit him this
afternoon. He had an extra copy ...)
