And on that note!

Would the baren owner experts chime in on what type of baren would be
suitable as my next baren?

I own a Murasaki baren, medium, suitable for just about everything and a
ball-bearing baren, suitable for power printing.

If I were in the market for another baren, maybe even a real hon baren, what
would the baren users recommend that I get? A delicate one? Another better
medium?

Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Maria

The mirror is very handy -- and right there if you are inspired to make a self portrait. Because I mostly use oil based ink for printing I find that a roll of Wax Paper is helpful for several reasons. I use it to transfer a key block print to another block -- the transparency allows me to line up the edges perfectly (I'll need to make some other excuse for those slightly off kilter prints) -- I also like to wrap up extra ink in little folded packets, I got a kick out of Karen Kunc doing the same thing on that wonderful demo video that was posted awhile back. I also have one of those razor-blade scrapers to keep the glass clean.

Looking forward to #44 it should be here at any minute!

Happy Printing,

I like the tip about using wax paper to transfer oily patterns to other blocks;
I've never tried it before.

The mirror is very useful. I started carrying a long, narrow compact type
mirror in my pocket sketch kit years ago when I was doing a lot of figure/life
painting and drawing classes.

Other than quickly showing-up errors I found it useful just to 'refresh' my
eyes, letting me break-free of focusing too much attention to one aspect of the
subject or work-in-progress; a sort of re-questioning of what-is-what.

Hi Ellen

We recently updated the blog to the latest version of Movable-Type and
along the way it looks like the comments session option has changed. Prior
it was open and anyone could male comments w/o logging in. I will take a
look at it later tonight and see what options need to be changed if any.
The problem with the old way is that we were getting tons of spam comments
from the net's robots and other search engines....it forced us to have to
moderate comments and for every valid comment we had many dozens of spam
messages....time consuming to cleanup !

Also let me know off-list if you need a blog id for authoring, I can set
that up for you...

thanks....Julio

Thank you all for the matt cutting information. One more question.
I signed for the 46 exchange but the list is not posted. How do I know
if I am signed properly? Saludos, Guadalupe

It really comes down to what kind of blocks you will be printing with
it - how 'delicate', etc.

For the 'your first baren' type of situation, where you want an 'all-
rounder', the 8-strand medium is usually tossed out as the place to
start. But once you have a collection of them building, you can then
start to specialize - moving either way (more delicate, rougher, etc.)
as needs dictate.

It sounds like you already have your 'medium' and your 'rough', so the
next logical step would be to get something for linework (assuming you
do that sort of thing).

An 8-fine would do that, or (much more expensive), a 12 or 16 super
fine. Higher numbers generally mean rougher barens, as the coil has
fewer projections, but if you make them from very thin strips, they
come out with a kind of thin 'miniature' coil that does excellent work
on key lines. But you need to keep the skin in very good condition ...

There are other ways to go though - another suggestion is to get
another 8-medium (or 8-thick) and _wrap_ it differently from the one
you already have: put a sheet of thin paper inside over the top of the
coil to 'weaken' it, or put a 'dome' of thin sheets _under_ the coil
to make it more curved, and thus far more accurate for targeting small
areas. This gives you a lot of flexibility to take on different
blocks ... you wrap it to suit the job at hand ...

It might also be worth looking at Goto-san's (relatively) new 'take-
shin' baren:
http://www.barenforum.org/mall/products/take_baren.php

Price is less than half a normal 'hon' baren, but the function is
almost identical.

Also, about the Mall ... Barbara posted about a new 'minimum order'
policy the other day. She didn't mention that this is not something we
here at Baren dreamed up - it is being pushed on us by Matsumura-san.
He's trying to wrestle with doing paperwork in English, and although
Barbara and Michelle are doing what they can on their end to help him
get through that stuff, he isn't finding it easy to handle
(translation: it's taking a boatload of his time ...).

For most people it won't matter, because most orders are well over
that limit anyway, but it does make it impossible to get 'just one
knife', or just a few sheets of paper. But maybe you already knew that
- when ordering from the other side of the planet you have to get you
ideas organized! :-)

Subject: TPC Art Festival
Posted by: Ellen Shipley

Today was set-up day for the TPC Art Festival.  I had to get my three pieces in bright and early.  I'm not used to seeing the sun rise.  The morning fog hadn't burned off yet.  ;- j

Everyone's super organized and I anticipate a good show.

Here's a shot of the display set-up.  The lobby is long and dark, but the display panels look like they'll have plenty of light.

There are 25 artists in all, and I believe I'm the only printmaker in the bunch.  For that matter, I think I'm the only printmaker in the Santa Clarita Art Associaton at the moment, but that will change eventually.  Afterall, College of the Canyons is still cranking out printmakers.  ;-]

I'll be doing a woodcut demo tomorrow afternoon.  I have a block that needs some cleaning up.  I've never been completely satisfied with how it prints.  Too many extranious woodblock marks.  That's what happens when I forget to leave a lip on the rim.
