To follow up on Maria, Mark, and Dave's comments on color... I've just started
a fascinating paperback, Color: A Natural History of the Palette by Victoria
Finlay (2002). Each chapter covers the history of a different color (ochre,
black/brown, white, red, etc.) and, though the title seems a bit esoteric, it
reads like a novel. I definitely recommend it.

One of my favorite books. I received a copy as a gift. I have since
given many copies. And it's one of only a few books that I re-read.
Art Spirit, by Robert Henri is another.

It's a great book. Beautifully written. You can feel the colors.

Thank you Mark, This research
on Caput Mortuum adds interest and depth to our knowledge
of the materials we use to make art. This is quite a revelation.

This past weekend was the opening of the 30th Annual (and last) Alma College Statewide Print Competition for Michigan printmakers.  The juror was Marjorie Devon, director of Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, NM.  Marjorie gave a presentation and talk about Tamarind and it's tradition of collaborative printmaking.  It was so interesting!  Right up until the question and answer part when I asked if printmakers were allowed to print and she said no.  Only their master printers printed.  That's when I started having a panic attack.

I don't know how the rest of you feel about the thought of having someone else print your work?  It's rather funny when I think about the fact that I do moku hanga, traditionally a collaborative process.  I remember reading recently about how back in the 1920's-30's when artists outside of Japan saw moku hanga prints and decided against doing them because they didn't have workshops full of people to do it for them.  They didn't even think they could do all the process by themselves so didn't try.  And now I'm doing it all by myself and in a tither about the thought of having a "workshop" print mine.  Full circle, eh?
