Happy New Year Printmakers!
I have been worrying about how my large (3ftX5ft) bamboo white line
print will stretch during printing so i made this
http://www.vizart.blogspot.com/ "white line" monoprint using oil based
relief ink with a bit of burnt plate 00 oil added sometimes to thin
and also lots of transparent medium (green) . I like the way it turned
out so i will probably go ahead and proceed with the bamboo print
using oil based inks instead of watercolors and on dry paper (so i
don't have to worry about paper stretch and registration). I used to
make lots of monotypes on plexi glass and this is really quite similar
but i did print by hand with a baren and sometimes a hard lino roller
2 inch. and on dry paper (still no large press) boohoo. I like the
painterly look and also the non grainy look of the oily inks. I am not
really sure about the archival qualities but i am not so sure i care
either. my old monotypes thinned with oil mostly and mineral spirits
seem to be holding up okay. Let me know what you think about the image
and or your thoughts about the (archivalness?) i haven't noticed any
haloing yet so i am hoping i will be alright. although i am seeing
some oiliness on the back of the paper on a couple the heaviest inked
areas. I have also done some experiments with the raven print that i
hope to photograph when the weather permits. I printed it as usual
with black oil based ink let dry somewhat (but still would get ink on
finger if i rubbed it) then i "paint" dry pearlescent pigments onto
print then let dry completely. works great! also thinking about
getting some akua kolor or akua intaglio ink. how long does it stay
open on wood? does it buckle paper if used in white line printing or
in large areas of color?

Sneetches

The last block for this print holds all of the characters and stories that I'll be overprinting on the map of Israel and the West Bank. Many will be Bible stories, but the first story I've carved and printed is one by Dr. Seuss. I first heard this story via Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron in a dharma talk audio I found on the internet. Here's Pema's version of the story:
Dr. Seuss tells another story about the Sneetches. The superior race, the ones that everybody aspires to be like and also the ones that everybody hates, are the Star-Belly Sneetches; they have stars on their bellies, and everybody else doesn't. One very clever fellow knew how predictable these Sneetches were, so he came in with a big machine that would put a star on your belly. All the Sneetches Without a star on their belly rushed in and came out with a star on their belly, but of course the original Star-Belly Sneetches still knew who and how superior they were. They weren't thrown by this at all. But to facilitate this very predictable situation, the same clever fellow came along with a new machine by which you could go in and get the star taken off your belly. So all the Star-Belly Sneetches went into this machine and came out without stars on their belly; the superior ones were now without stars.

The clever . . .

Title: Poppies
Monoprint/oil based white line woodcut print on Rives BFK Buff colored paper
image size: 18X24 inches
paper size 22X30 inches
this is a one of a kind monoprint I carved out the "white lines" from a block of wood then hand painted the image areas using relief oil based inks slightly thinned with burnt plate oil 00 then transfered to paper using a baren.
I consider each print to be an original oil painting on wood transfered onto paper.
