Bareners,
Barbara, John Center and I organized the first fundraiser for the Firemen
of 911, in Martucci Gallery, Irvington, New York, .
In fact all prints were sold and I put up additional ones after sales, so
several woodblock prints sold 3 times over...
We had decided on the selling prince of $45 each and the exhibit was heart-
rending as the guest book responses can attest to. Sales were quick.
$1,400 was sent to a Relief Fund for Firemen
I have complete record and guest book.

After that the NYCity Public Lbrary Print Room,Roberta Wadell, Curator,
acquired the full portfolio for their permanent collection, to be studied by
professionals in the print field.

The prints travelled across the U.S.to California, making stops at
several places where Baren members, among them Georgia Garside, Sharen Linder,
and Dan Dew. could exhibited them. I don't know how much was collected in
these exhibits.

Jan Ramirez, Curator of the virtual National September 11 Memorial and
Museum at the World Trade Center arranged for the portfolio to be put on
the Internet:

Hi guys,
I've only received the colophone of 47 exchange yesterday and I'm really
excited about that. I feel all works are fab and it's great for me to
compare all types of styles and paper. I'm honoured to be among participants
of this project. See you in the next exchange.

How do you think, maybe I could organize a small exhibition for my students
and people to show, and tell them about japanese ways of blockprinting? Moku
Hanga is almost unknown here in Poland. If anyone minds, or have suggestions
please post it. I want to respect every rights you have.

Thank you Maria for your hard work.

All best.
Olo.

Thank you Barbara, I will take part in this fundraiser and want to thank all who took part in the Fireman of 911 especially Diane Lyons and John Center. I tried to get our Los Angeles Library to show them but they got all involved in protocol so it didn’t happen. Good for NYC. I have the set and every once in a while open it to show someone or just look myself. It was a heart rendering collection as I’m sure this one will be also. Bea Gold

Hello, I would like to try shellac on plywood. Do you put the shellac before carving or after?

Maria congratulations on sending the blocks. I did not write personally. I am shy about responding.
Sometimes people bother by so many mails and I am afraid they will block my e-mail.
Other people have complained that I do not write personally. It is a difficult art of knowing when to mail. I do not block any person nor am I bother by so many e-mails. I read them or erase them when I can.
I am glad I brought some lino to a business trip. I have been carving and having a good time while waiting at the hotel.
Saludos, Guadalupe

Carol,
Thanks for this info! I knew John was involved but had forgotten you were
co-organizer! Glad we raised so much money. If anyone needs this info here it
is, I admit I did not have it in one place to look back on, but did find the
collection on the baren exchange pages.
I have contacted the Japanese Gardens here in Portland, it is one of the premier
gardens in the US.
A few years ago Print Arts NW did an exhibit organized by Richard Steiner of 15
artists from Japan and the Gardens sponsored it. We sold a ton of that work,
over $5000 so I think that their cliental is very interested in Japanese
woodblock and that they will certainly support this endeavor. It will be a win
win, they have to do little work and will have a great fundraiser.
I had forgotten that the prints sold individually, I thought it was by
portfolio. We can see what the garden wants to do, I think however they handle
it it will work well. So our job is to make the work and theirs will be to sell
it. With inflation and being 10 years later, I think we can safely raise the
price up from $45. I already have 6 people saying "yes" so we are on the way to
making this happen.
My best to all
Barbara

Barbara,
It is indeed a wonderful idea.
Count me in!

You know there is the Seattle Asian Art Museum up here, it's affiliated with the Seattle Art Museum. They might be interested in displaying it - and maybe even selling prints in their gift shop.
