My two cents on shellac and other finishes on woodblocks for printing
water-borne pigments - all such treatments reduce the amount of water (and
pigment) the surface of the block can hold so finished blocks print lighter
than unfinished.

Some woods naturally have areas of greater and lesser porosity - more porous
areas print darker than less porous areas. Some woods (oak, pine, and
others), have grain which has alternating more and less porous parts
depending on where the growth rings (fiber bundles) intersect the block
surface, so the darker and lighter areas printed exactly follow the wood
grain - this characteristic might be desirable. The grain of cherry is much
more uniformly absorbent than oak, pine, etc -- but independent of grain,
cherry (and basswood etc) have seemingly random areas which are more or less
absorbent than the rest of the block surface - when printed, these look
blotchy. You can reduce or eliminate grain-printing and blotchiness by
applying one or more coats of shellac, varnish, polyurethane, etc. These
make the wood less and less porous until, if you apply enough coats, the
surface is entirely waterproof and glassy. The more you apply, the less
moisture the block will hold and the paler the printing.

You can easily demonstrate this for yourself - prepare a woodblock but don't
carve it - just apply some finish to parts of the block in some pattern you
can recognize, then dampen and brush up the entire surface and print.
You'll see the effect that your finish has on your printing immediately, I
think.

In terms of carving, finishes do stiffen the wood fibers a bit so cuts may
tend to have less tear-out, but a sharp tool is better than 50 coats of
finish in making clean and easy cuts.

San Antonio "Relief for Relief" Juried Show:
This will be in the same place as the Summit and the Baren Summit Exhibition for Summiteers, (Peaks and Valleys: Summit Relief Print Exhibition ) at the Aztlan, but is not a "Baren Show".

This juried show was organized to bring more awareness and access to various relief printmaking methods, especially Hanga and white line, to the San Antonio Community.

Reliefs for Relief: Juried Exhibition of Prints benefitting Japan Disaster Relief
at Centro Cultural Aztlan. Reliefs for Relief will Exhibit prints juried by Lyle Williams, McNay Museum Curator of Prints & Drawings. On exhibit during the time the Aztlan is hosting Baren Summit (a gathering of printmakers practicing Japanese woodcut traditions), exhibition plans were nearly complete when the tsunami hit Japan.
The exhibit was therefor deicated to raise funds for Japanese disaster relief.
For a prospectus email Reliefs4Relief@live.com.
There are special recognition awards for best white line and for hanga, but there will not be cash awards as we will be raising money for relief efforts instead.

Yours,

Barbara, two groups is a very good idea. Instead of us having to make 50 prints, it will be better to make 25, but I have a feeling there will be more people signing on to this.

I agree with this, 50 would be a lot to print. It might be good to have some single prints for sale too for folks who want to buy and can't afford the big burrito, or are not collectors in that way.

Send Message: To this poster

Here is an upcoming workshop in the heart of rural Nevada!

This worshop is being offered by a resident artist in the Goldwell Open Air Museum, an incredible retreat for artists in the midst of a Nevada ghost-town and the beautiful Mojave Desert. At the time of the workshop there should be an incredible wild-flower bloom in nearby Death Valley so if anyone is thinking of coming to the desert for fun and woodcut games, this is the time!

You deserve much accolades Barbara for coming up with this idea.
I am involved with a local effort so will not be participate.

For clarification however... I was under the impression that this is not an exchange of prints as has been done for the past several years, but a single print was to be submitted by each participant and this collection of prints was to be auctioned off as a fund raiser.

Having two collections of 25 odd is a benefit in the fact that it could potentially achieve more money for the cause.

It is 30 prints from each person for the project, at this point, 52 which makes
it 1560 prints. If we cannot raise a ton of money with this it will be criminal
I envision 52 or more portfolios with up to 30 prints in each. It will depend on
the actual number of participants by the end of May.
This will be one giant job, putting them all together. I may have to enlist
help. To bad Maria lives so far away, she likes a challenge!

It's interesting that some of the viewers have been having trouble 'resolving' this image properly. Not so strange, given that the outlines are incomplete, but perhaps with these next two colours in place the objects will be more recognizable. First let's put on a 'double' gradation (one brush, flipped over in my hand to rub in two places):

Immediately followed with another one right on top of it:
