Greetings Bareners,
During May I had the good fortune to visit Crete, Greece. It was essentially a holiday, but provided an opportunity to look first hand at Minoan artifacts.
I have updated my June prints that are transcribed from Minoan ceramic designs of a nautilus and octopus.
My re-constructed website has now two extra themes of Lincoln cathedral's bas relief animals and the west front frieze.
They may be of interest to you.
All the best

Hello David. I saw one of your videos , they are great.

What kind of wood is the one you use for a color yellow that looks like the sea , the one on June 1.?
What type of glue did you use to paste the paper?

The wood I can get here is pine wood or plywood that is hard and peels into little peaces.
Which one do you recommend if I am a beginner on wood?
Thank you, Saludos, Guadalupe

I'm not really sure what you have seen, but in any case, the only wood
I am using in this project is Japanese cherry ...

If the paper has no delicate lines, I use a simple 'mucilage' paste,
like the stuff we used to use in school, when I was a kid. If there
are many fine lines, the paper has to be pasted down more securely,
and I use a white wood glue (spread thinly).

I really don't have much experience with woods other than the cherry
and boxwood that I use these days. The choice of wood depends
completely on your designs; if you want detail, you will need a hard
and dense wood ... but this can be quite difficult to work with ...

apologies for the naive posting, but i thought some of you may
appreciate this closer look at Hokusai's "Great Wave" [1].

unfortunately, i don't have access to more than a few Ukiyo-e
reproductions, and i suspect their quality is rather poor, but
it's always thrilling to see something new in (even an image of)
a print i've seen many times in some form.

i've enjoyed Dave's "interesting prints" exhibitions [2], and
i'm interested in other Barener's observations of classic or
obscure Ukiyo-e prints as i build up the courage to start
carving one myself.

As I was looking at these tiny little prints, it occurred to me that we have
never had an exchange of these tiny prints, the smallest I remember doing was
5x7 with a 4x6 image...

What do you all think of doing an exchange of these really small prints? I think
they are about 2x3 or less, smaller than an American Business Card. It would be
a real challenge for us to work this small, especially for those of us (myself
in this group) that are better printers than carvers...small is not necessarily
easier... although the cost of paper would be a nice bonus... we would need so
little.
Lets talk about this....can we do it? maybe pick a tiny image, like a bug or a
button, or a little flower.... I think any images would work.
My best to all

seems like an intriguing challenge
one would need good wood for the details
and a magnifying glass

Barbara,

We did do a small print with a image size of eight square inches, though I
forget the sheet size, some time back.

I'd very much like to take part in a small print exchange as well, who else is
up for this?

I took part in the Bookmark prints echange in 2001 and 2003. It was fun and I just found
the web site for it. hugues przysiuda site is www.estampe.be/ exchange was the coordinator
and has all the bookmarks up from 2001 – 2007. I found mine 188 and 189. They are listed
alphabetically and he has 484 up on his site. They are 2” x 8” . The exchange was out of Belgum.
Did anyone else take part? I’d love to take part in a small print exchange. Our #42 was 3” x 9”. Bea

Can we make #50 a nafuda print??? I think we can get the exact size...or maybe
there is not an exact size since the ones Dave shows on his site seem to be of
two sizes. Dave, what is the answer here? Is there an exact size?

Here is an excellent source of information on this sort of little print:
http://miniaturejapaneseprints.com/

And this site in Japanese has many different sets:

All together there, _thousands_ of images for inspiration for this
project!

Thank you very much for your reply and the good words about my work!
This estimulated me very much. Now I begin to wonder how I can do a work that you could use,
as if I understood what you said, it could be like a blok print with the paper I make?
Thanks

The small prints I have must be match box covers, they are that size. It looks
like we can choose a size as the sizes do seem to be pretty varied.
This is going to be a lot of fun...and in the fall after the Tsunami exhibition
I will even have time to carve and print one

Barbara, I want to do the tiny print exchange very much, and because I will probably only make it
to the waiting list because I signed up for #49, I'm considering dropping out of #49 one so I'll
be able to get on the list for the tiny print exchange. It seems many of us want to try the little one.
Even though #49 is small and would also be fun to do, we still have that ruling, don't we, that the
first choices on an exchange list go to those who did not sign up for the previous exchange?

Subject: Print donations for Haiku Society of America
Posted by: Bette Norcross Wappner --

I had the pleasure of donating some prints to sell at the Haiku Society of America's meeting June 3, 4, & 5th in Bend, Oregon. I wasn't able to attend so I sent 48 note cards, 48 bookmarks, and 11 original 5x7 haiku prints. Wasn't much but I hope it raised some funds. Congratulations to an'ya and Petar, the HSA Coordinators for the event! Reports are that the event was very successful with over 5,000 people attending the Art Walk, Meeting, Haiku Walk, and Workshop.
