here's another thought on black and white
and what i tell folks when they say that oft- heard line-
"why don't you use a little color?"
my mother (who painted in oils) always was trying to get me to do more color !
BUT
when one looks through a PRISM
the rainbow of color IS there
between the black and white

so i believe that for some
when looking at a black and white print
the brain adds- in the colors it wants/needs
automatically or subliminally

perhaps for others -
their brain does NOT do that-
and those are the ones asking for color !

just a thot in an interesting discussion

Hi Gillyin,

What an interesting theory. Rather like watching an old black and white
movie or tv show and just seeing it in natural color after awhile. I like
that.

I'm a fan of black and white, or monotone prints. I'm always looking to add
color somehow, but I'm seldom satisfied. I've only ever gotten it right
when I either used primary colors or shades of ochre and sienna. I guess I
just see better in black and white. I find them crisper, more authentic,
undistracted by color. I'm not someone who works naturally with color. I
admire people who do.

interesting, and I agree. But I think color starts to speak through it's
temperature. And fully when there are at least three values of the
temperature. Thats why its different from using just black and white. Even
when there is play between temperature of black (coventional) and white
(there is no REAL white in nature) there is always a lack of a third side.
That's just my free and unfinished foggy thinking. Cheers.
