Subject: [Baren 44493] new linocut

After doing mostly woodcuts for the past couple of months, I started a new linocut yesterday for my upcoming show in December. Theme will be the UN International Year of Forests and I will have woodcuts, linocuts, photographs and etchings in the show, all with trees.
Inspired by the City of the World project I'm participating in, I decided to make it a puzzle print. I've never made one before, so can't wait to finish carving and ink it up.
I posted a photo of it (half way done) on my Facebook page if you want to see what it looks like so far: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Printster/279046518796901?sk=wall
Any special advice or tips and tricks I need to know on printing puzzle prints??

Thanks!

Keep in mind that the cobalt drier is highly toxic and the odor is noxious,
meaning you will have to have excellent ventilation while using it. Years
ago I used it only once in an edition and as far as I'm concerned the
edition is ruined. I used a tiny dropper to put a tiny drop of the drier
into each of my ink colors. To this day I can smell the drier on the long
dry prints. It ruins that lovely oily ink smell...

Hello to all,
I am a relatively recent 'silent' member living in Australia that has been enjoying very much the baren forum, so thank you to all!
I am very interested in the topic of wood textures (some of it recently discussed) and through some research my impression is that some of the japanese artists that have incorporated the wood texture in their prints at a very unique level are (hopefully I am not making a terrible mistake..!) among the artists characterised as doing sosaku manga (artists such as Takumi Shinagawa, Kiyoshi Saito just to give some examples). I am trying to find information about the technique but have not been very successful. What I find very appealing is that many different textures can appear on a single print (showing dofferent directions, etc), which suggests to me that many different pieces of wood may be necessary, even if for a very small part of the whole print. Would this mean a single full block for each part? The reason I ask is that I have found some very nice (rough) textured wood but it is not easy to find in the shops where mostly people want a smooth nice finish, so I am trea!
suring these pieces and don't want to cut a big block to print a little bit. The challenge of not using single blocks for each part of the image would be the registration, wouldn't it? I am currently trying this using stencils, which is working to some degree with a very simple image. Unfortunately I don't have a blog to show you, hopefully one day when time is freer.

Many thanks again, Laura Castell

Barbara, Mara and Marylinn. Your advice is most complete and very helpfull. I have not done metal etchings with a sharp tooll for a long time and I would like to try it before December. I made some prints and they were very opaque. I will try all the advice, thank you.I also have some aqua colors so I will try those also. Saludos, Guadalupe

Subject: Studio construction update: Oct 30
Posted by: Dave Bull

After - literally - years of paralysis on the studio construction, I finally got some work done down there this weekend. First my stepladders came out of storage, and took a position under the stairwell hole:

This hole was hammered out for me shortly after I bought this place, by a couple of local handymen. Here's a snapshot taken when they were done:

If you had told me at the time that it would be ten years - to the month! - before I moved forward on it, I would have looked at you like you were nuts ...

Switching gears now and working on the Schuyler House xmas card.  I always do a castle theme, as that's the company logo, and this year I was thinking of doing something with a long, tall castle window.

Something like this:

Or this:

But it seems so static.  So I thought about adding a couple of castle denizens, and maybe a tree just peaking into the picture.  I've wanted to stick a castle ornament on a tree for a couple years now, but I haven't found a look I liked.  This is getting there.

Subject: Livin' it up on a Friday night
Posted by: Sherrie Y

David left yesterday afternoon for a gig on the Front Range and I didn't expect him home until late, so I decided to see what evenings were like in Studio V. Yup. Big happenings on a Friday night.

I'm feeling really manic about printing right now... it's been so long since I've printed just for me that every time I go to the studio I feel like I've had wayyyyy too much caffeine. (Note: pretty much any caffeine is way too much for me, so I tend to avoid it.)
HaveToPrintAsFastAsICanBeforeTheyTellMeIHaveToStopAgain. Or something like that.

The result is three color passes for 5 colors in two days on a brand new linocut. Goofy.

I didn't take a photo of the first pass, which was a very light pseudo-blend of gray to blue. What's a pseudo-blend, you ask? Well. It's one color of ink on one brayer and another color on the other brayer, blended on the block instead of the inking slab. It's a quick-and-dirty solution when I don't have a roller wide enough to ink the entire block, and since most of the middle part where the pseudo-blend occurs will be covered up by other colors.... it's good enough.

The third color, second pass was also very light, but I think you can see it here. Pink! Most of this will be covered up by the....
