Barbara, the amount would be approximately $2,270. I sold 30 pieces and
$20 extra. This was mailed to you twice with the buyers' checks made out to
the Red Cross with the note for Japan Tsunami Relief.on each of their
checks.

Do I have to go all through my records again? Hope not. I have the
buyers' names and what they bought.

Please do keep a set until I hear from the Castle hotel and restaurant
about whether they are interested in the idea I presented about the Japan
prints last week. The idea was to use some of the Baren prints in the
renovation of the hotel, now under Japanese ownership; If that happens the
details would be worked out.

I will wait about 3 weeks and if I don't get any word from the manager I
will call him.

I am also committed and working on other plans right now.

Best to you
Carol

Thank you for all the congrats...and I got quite a few folks asking about Paulann's poems so here is her website...
She reads them beautifully and had I heard her read them I might have been too intimidated to do the images! ha

Sorry to post this to the list...I meant to send it off list and as soon as I sent this I found the info...they sold 81 prints...
Fabulous! and donated $5700 to the Red Cross in South Africa for Tsunami relief victims.
I will get this info posted really soon, I think totally we raised over $12000 for relief, maybe more, so congratulations printmakers....our efforts helped! And will continue to do so as I am sending work to the UK for a fundraiser there. Every so often we sell one on the website.

Send Message: To this poster

Dear Baren Forum members,
I am interested in mixing my own pigments from dry powder for woodblock
printing. I have read recipes and instructions for making watercolours,
which include the use of gum arabic, oxgal and some form of sugar. Are
these three ingredients necessary when the pigment is to be used for
woodblock printing? I have also read David Bull's method, which is quite
different. I would be interested to know from anyone who makes their own
pigments specifically from a powder with the intention of printing from a
woodblock, what their ingredient list and method is.
Kind regards,
Peter Brown.

Powdered pigment is messy (and a PAIN to clean up if you spill -- also a
health hazard if you breathe the dust -- wear a mask)...

I've had excellent results in MANY print editions simply mixing dry pigment
directly into rice paste and printing (Japanese technique -- brushing
pigment into dampened block surface and printing by hand with baren).

I cook up as much rice paste (mixing dry rice starch with water and
stirring over a double boiler until it's properly done and thickened -- a
few minutes) as I need, then use a spoon to tip the 'right' amount of
pigment into the paste and mix with a small brush -- let sit for a few
minutes and stir again and it's good to go. I've used this method with
around a dozen different pigments and all worked very well with excellent
distribution of pigment throughout the mixture -- I think the very viscous
paste makes it MUCH easier to get a good mixture of pigments (many pigments
do NOT like to mix into plain water but mix well into paste).

Anyway, no need to make it any more difficult than that, in my opinion --
it works, it's easy, the color is quite fast after printing -- works great!

But... I currently prefer pigment suspensions (Daniel Smith, Guerra Paint
and Pigment, etc) to dry pigment because there's no dust hazard and...
Once you spill a teaspoon of dry pigment and start sweeping and your
entire studio turns Prussian Blue... Well, suspensions are much easier to
clean up! :-)

Hi Mike,
How do you store your rice pigment paints or is it a one time use product?

You can store it in the refrigerator for almost 2 weeks....
You will know when you should not use it any more....

Subject: Arts of Japan series : print #2 - image concept
Posted by: Dave Bull

It's time to begin work on the second print in the Arts of Japan series, even though we're far from 'finishing' the first one. I have yet to print the second batch of 100 or so of that one (although there were enough in the first batch to supply all the current collectors, so there's no panic on that), and there is still plenty of case construction work waiting for me in the woodshop ...

The theme for this next one has been decided, and will be sculpture - in particular 'monumental' sculpture. Given that fact, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to make a pretty good guess about what the image might look like!

There are many possible such sculptures scattered all over the country, but I have selected a particular one that is situated not too far from here, and the reason is that ... I think that rather than reproduce an old print of this object, I'd like to have a go at creating a new one.

Yes - does that strike fear into the hearts of the collectors? Dave is going to include originals in this series!

For the curious, here's a Google search of images of the object in question ...

Subject: Talking About Money
Posted by: Annie B

ShowMoney

My mother taught me that there are four things you shouldn't talk about: money, religion, sex and politics. I've hit all those taboos at one time or another, on this blog and in my work. Lately, since I started working on the Loaded series, the big topic has been money.

My proposal for the A.P.E. Gallery show that opened last week was to show my large prints and also to print some money the night of the reception. I decided that in addition to printing the money I also wanted to talk with people about how much was reasonable to charge for a 17-note packet of printed currency. I wrote up a list of all the money I had spent out of pocket ($678.23) and how many hours I had spent (98) to produce a total of 60 packets of money and asked for people's opinions.

Here are some sample responses.

On this blog, a commenter named Curt gave me a formula to use that even included the gallery's 25% take:
If you want to make an hourly rate R and assume you'll sell all of the bundles in a short amount of time, then the math is simple for determining the price P: costs = expenses, i.e.

98*R + 678 = (60*P)*0.75

Thus for rates of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 per hour, you'll want to get 15.07 36.84, 58.62, 80.40, 102.18, 123.96, 145.73 or 167.51 for each bundle
I thought $20/hr was more than reasonable, but that would mean charging almost $60 per packet. My original thought had been that the packets should cost closer to $1 per note, more like $20 or $25 per packet, so this was disappointing.

Ready
Ready to start the demo

My Facebook friends had varying opinions. Several said $60 to $100 was reasonable for art. Everyone agreed that it was practically impossible to determine how much a hypothetical buyer would be willing to pay.

Back on this blog, Tibi noted the educational value of revealing the artist's costs. I definitely had that as one of my goals. Diana suggested a sort of sliding scale. I liked that idea, so I decided to use that at the gallery on Friday night.

Subject: Yoshida sailing ship - test printing begins

Today saw the first test printing on the Yoshida sailboat design. Tsushima-san and I sat down alternately at her workstation and put down the first half dozen or so impressions on some test sheets.
