Hi All,

I thought it was about time to introduce myself...having been a reader/lurker for the past year. My name is Janel Warmington and I live in Nova Scotia. I have just come to woodcutting in the past year; I've becomeaddicted in the most wonderful way. I have worked all my professional life as a shoemaker (www.handmadeshoes.ca)and so some of my skill with a knife has pleasantly crossed over to woodcutting.

I have been involved in one exchange and found the experience of printing an edition of thirty exhilarating and terrifying. I have signed up for the latest exchangeinvolving the moku hanga challenge. I've been cutting blocks andthinking ahead to printing requirements. At this point I'm not prepared to invest in the Japanese brushes but wonder if anyone has a suggestion for an suitable alternative.

I also write to say that the Baren has been an invaluable resource for me in the past year and Ideeply appreciate the work and devotion of the folks thathave put it together. It has been my pleasure to see all theexception work and to 'meet' you all via the Baren Forum.I look forward to the changes and revitalization and to the ongoing conversation around woodcutting.

Many thanks,

Janel Warmington

Thanks Mike for sharing the spencer museum link. My very first woodcut
is there! I joined in fast and have never been sorry. Has it really
been that many years, my first exchange was 2001? Great reminders of
all the varied work and artists who have been and remain part of
Baren. Looking back is perhaps a good look toward our future.

Now we have our Maria guiding us on into the next phase of Baren. Life
constantly changes, it is good Baren changes along the way, keeping
our group vital. To the next generation of wonderful printmakers!

As far as numbers go in exchanges they seem to grow bigger or smaller
of their own accord. This next one is all hanga, that limits
participation and the paper size is mid range, might push a few out.
So, the numbers are low. Than there are the times we have had 2
exchanges because of high interest. When asked to do 100 tiny prints
there was enthusiastic participation. Some things need changing as we
move with new technology and face the challenges involved in keeping
our group participation high. I don't personally feel the need to
change the number of prints in our exchanges. If an exchange is not
full it goes forward anyway, limiting itself, for, I am sure, varied
reasons.

That said, I am carving away on my next exchange block, in the
beautiful sunny August days, by my adored Willapa Bay.

Best of luck with the updates. Nothing wrong with labor saving technology.

Anything that makes all your hard work easier is ok with me. 8-]

I try to avoid standard sizes in my art! My reasoning is that standard sized items are mass-produced and less interesting. Standard sized frames are generally made for photographs and don't do much for original art.

I've had to cut my own mats for over 25 years with an inexpensive Logan, but floating the print is an elegant alternative.

Janel, welcome to this great Baren group.

You asked for brush suggestions. I've been using shoe brushes, the small
ones, about 5 inches long and brush is about 1 and 1/2 inches round. I'm
very satisfied and no complaints, although I have several other larger ones.
Good luck and enjoy printmaking!

So you were a shoe maker! I looked at all the shoes on the site and they
are very creative and amusing. There is a wedding coming up and I am the
Mother of the Bride. The sequined heels gave me an idea. But I am not up to
that, plus this is off the subject.

Welcome Janel,

I think I can speak that for most of us here we first joined and lurked around for a while before introducing ourselves to the group so don't' worry you are in fine company !
For me it was December 1997 and I read and read the archives till I finally did my first contribution in February 1998; a short book review about the Japanese printmaking movement of the 50's & 60's which by the way is still online in one of those dark corners of our website!

Back then the Baren discussion group was quite small, maybe 10-20 members, Dave had not created the website, most if not all the discussion was about traditional Japanese technique, the mall was years in the future and the very successful Baren exchanges existed only in the mind of one Mr. John Amoss who I am happy to say is still with us today. Maria, Gayle, Mike & Barbara (along with a few others key members) also joined Baren that year and since then have been doing an awesome job keeping our community moving forward not only with fresh ideas but also with lots of hard 'behind the scenes' work.

Moving forward with these changes is a bit scary and exciting at the same time. As Maria said we all love this community that David Bull started and led for so many years and you can be assured we would not be moving forward without Dave's blessing. All your favorite Baren stuff will still be available and the transformation will hopefully be as transparent as possible.

Thanks and again welcome !

Big oops....I gave recognition for starting up our exchanges to John Amoss when in reality it was one of our past council members Jim Mundie (razor blade Jim as I recall !).....who happily is also still very much with us !!!!!

Sorry for the slip up and thanks to Dave for catching that .......Julio
