Welcome to the [Baren] Encyclopedia of Woodblock Printmaking.

(created by members of [Baren]: the Discussion Forum for Woodblock Printmaking)

In a moment, when you enter the Encyclopedia, you will find yourself in the midst of a world of information on woodblock printmaking. There are three 'levels' to this Encyclopedia ...

  1. - the main outline. This is a single page that contains a broad overview of the entire contents of the Encyclopedia. At the head of each group of topics in the outline, you will see a highlighted link. When you click on one of these links, you will be taken down to the next 'level' ...
  2. - a small quick-loading page containing a list of Encyclopedia entries related to that particular topic. This page will open in a new window of your browser. (Depending on your particular software, you may have to position and resize this window.) Selecting one of the highlighted entry titles will take you to ...
  3. - the Encyclopedia entry itself, which will appear in that same new window. You can read the entry at your leisure, and then easily move back up to the topic list, in order to select another entry in the same topic area. Closing that window that 'popped-up' will allow you to see the outline again, where you can choose another area of interest.

Navigation through the Encyclopedia is all based on this 'three-level' tree structure, using these two main windows. It is difficult to get 'lost' ...

The entries have all been carefully prepared and organized (by the contributors) to conform to the Encyclopedia's uniform format. Some of them are concise descriptions of some single aspect of woodblock printmaking - some of them are extended tutorials.

Although there are already many megabytes of information here, the Encyclopedia is still in a relatively early stage of development. A number of the topics given in the outline have no entries prepared for them yet. And of course, this is perhaps where you come in. If you have knowledge on some aspect of woodblock printmaking, and would like to share it with others, please consider becoming a contributor to the Encyclopedia. Information on how to do so is contained here. (Note that it is not necessary for you to have any knowledge of HTML, or other computer programming languages. The editors can assist you in the preparation of your information in the Encyclopedia's format.)

There really isn't much more to explain. Just 'dive in' to the Encyclopedia and browse among those entries that interest you. The editors are of course very interested in your feedback and suggestions on how this Encyclopedia can be improved in any way. After you've had a browse, please drop them a line.
