This self-portrait is actually two images of myself,
one contemporary in Uganda, another depicting myself sketching (in
djalaba!) in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco in 1964. As the son of a
professional photographer & weekend watercolorist, I was
encouraged by my father to draw from an early age. Somehow, against
all odds and all logic (and, some would mutter, against the manifest
evidence that my time could more productively spent otherwise), I
have kept it up. The quotation is taken from Antoine de St.-Exupery's
novel 'Pilote de Guerre' (which appeared in English as "Flight to
Arras" I think).
