Grandfather Raven
The indigenous peoples of the Queen Charlotte Islands tell a creation myth in which Raven steals fire, fresh water, the sun, the moon and the stars from their guardian, Gray Eagle. He hangs the stars, moon and sun in the sky, and spills the fresh water on the land. He flies on with the fire and the smoke forever blackens his beautiful white feathers. Finally, the fire burns his beak and he drops the firebrand on the rocks. The fire hides within the rocks. This is why sparks fly when you knock two
rocks together. (Clark 150-51)Aaron Gillette
