The opportunities to spend time observing wildlife in their
natural habitat sometimes come unexpectedly. While driving along the
farmlanes west of town one evening, I happened upon several sandhill
cranes standing in the marsh grasses along a fenceline. They seemed
content to continue eating and drinking from the pond and ignore me.
The sun began to set and provided the perfect backlighting to
silhouette the birds. Wanting to capture the moment, I quickly put
the image onto paper to be translated later into a woodblock print.
This print is one in a series of five crane prints.
