  • Paper type: Washi, any Japanese printmaking paper
  • Registration period: One month starting October 1, 2008
  • Drop-out deadline: January 1, 2009 If you must drop out of the exchange, please do so as early as possible in order to give people on the waiting list time to complete and submit their prints. If you drop out after this date then a penalty may be imposed.
  • Delivery deadline for finished prints: February 1, 2009 -- if you do not deliver acceptable prints by this date then a penalty may be imposed.
  • Collated exchange mailing deadline:March 1, 2009. The coordinator is required to complete mailing the collated prints on or before this date.
  • click here to order a case for your exchange printsExchange Case for your exchange prints may be ordered from the Baren Mall -- these are a dark blue cloth-covered 'flop-open' type box (with cords for tying it closed), contained in a cardboard slip case. The prints simply stack up inside it. An 'official' Baren label for your case may be downloaded here -- edit the exchange number on the front and spine and then print it and paste it onto the cardboard slip case -- it is designed to wrap around the slip case so that the exchange number is visible on the spine.
  • Colophon information: Please fill out and submit the print information form to send your print details for the colophon page the coordinator will prepare as soon as possible after your prints are mailed.

ESSENTIALS
  • Participation: You must be an active member of [Baren] in order to participate in this exchange. The mailing list that makes up [Baren] is open to everyone to join, and the membership is thus made up of a mix of 'lurkers' and active participants in the forum. Signing up for an Exchange obliges your active participation in [Baren] discussions... If you remain a 'mystery' name, it leaves everyone feeling quite uncomfortable.
  • Rejected prints: If your prints do not conform to the above specifications for Medium, Image size, Paper size, Paper type, and/or Delivery deadline then the coordinator should promptly reject them, notify you by email, and (if you enclosed sufficient postage) promptly return them. You may repair and/or replace the prints prior to the delivery deadline or drop out of the exchange prior to the drop-out deadline without penalty, otherwise a penalty may be imposed.
  • Communications: email for coordinator: coordinator39@barenforum.org
It is essential that the coordinator be in close and timely communication with you. You must respond promptly to e-mails sent from the coordinator and must notify the coordinator of any change in e-mail address. If you become 'lost' and do not respond to communications from the coordinator, you may be dropped from the exchange without further notice. If this occurs after the Drop-out deadline, a penalty may imposed.
  • Penalty: The [Baren] Exchange Manager will determine if you may be subject to penalty. Any such penalty results in giving you last place in any active subsequent exchange participants lists for a period not to exceed one year. Subsequent penalties may result in permanent ban from participating in any [Baren] Exchange.
MAILING
  • Delivery information: You must enclose 31 prints, a self-addressed mailing label, and sufficient return postage (in the coordinator's native currency or postage). If you do not know the exact amount of return postage, please send more than you think will be required, a guideline is $10 for USA to USA delivery, $20 for international delivery. Please deliver your prints in a package that can easily be reused for shipping the collated suite back to you.
  • In the USA, the best way to send the prints is Priority Mail. Flat rate envelope is $4.80 anywhere in the US and will fit the smaller chu-ban exchanges. For larger size exchanges, please see:

  • For International Priority Mail please see: http://www.usps.com/international/prioritymailinternational.htm

Sign-up for [Baren] Exchange #39
  • Sign-up begins at 3:00 p.m. of October 1, 2008 (GMT). All interested members may sign up at that time, however those members who participated in the previous exchange will appear on the "Waiting List" list for the first week of sign-up (through 2:59:59 p.m. of October 8th (GMT) in order to encourage broadest participation in each exchange.
    • Note: the actual moment of startup has been selected in order that the largest possible number of [Baren] members will be awake. Given the global range of our group this is difficult, but the huge width of the Pacific Ocean gives us a 'window' of opportunity; while the Pacific sleeps, the rest of the world is awake. So here is a rough guide to the time...

3:00 pm GMT is about 5 am in Honolulu, 8 am in Los Angeles, 10 am in Chicago and Mexico, 11 am in New York, noon for Brazilians, 4 pm in London, 6 pm in Israel and Athens, afternoon/evening for those in Europe and the Middle East, 11 pm in Hong Kong and Perth, Australia, midnight in Japan and 1 am on the 2nd in Sydney, Australia...

When calculating the exact moment of sign-up for your particular time zone, please remember that GMT does not change during the summer; it is a year-round stable base of reference. If your local zone does use summer time, you will have to make the necessary adjustment ... If you are confused about how to find the correct time, please visit the Time Zone Converter page for assistance.

  • After the first week, those who were placed on the Waiting List because they participated in the previous exchange will be moved to the end of the list. Subsequent sign-ups will be appended to the list in the order they were time-stamped by our server. The first thirty who signed up will appear in the "Subscription list" and the rest will appear in the "Waiting List".
  • (Anyone who will be 'on holiday' or away from their computer during their particular sign-up period should make arrangements with a friend to make the sign-up for them.)
