Bamboo sheaths from Mr. Kikuhide Goto
Mr. Goto is a maker of the traditional baren (his products are
to be found on this page of the Mall).
Because he uses a large number of bamboo
sheaths in the production of his barens, he is constantly searching for
good skins. For many years, many of his baren customers have requested that he
make them available, and he is now doing so.
These are from the 'madake' plant, and these sheaths are imported to Japan
from mainland China. He has selected them for baren tying with an eye
to thickness, colour, and general suitability.
They of course differ from batch to batch, depending on the climate
and weather conditions under which they grew, but these are all
suitable for professional use.
He sells them in batches of 20. They are approximately 15cm in width, and will fit any normal baren.
He also has a number of skins that don't quite meet his standards; we
are listing these as 'practice grade', as we know many of our overseas
customers have a great deal of trouble finding enough skins to
practice with! They are available as an add-on 'Combo Pak' to the regular sheaths.
Because these skins are so light, yet quite long, they are difficult
to ship safely. Goto-san has devised a fairly light-weight shipping
method, but when you are ordering small quantities, shipping will
add considerably to the 'per sheath' cost. Try entering different
