Guadalupe,
Thank you for sharing the site and the prints. A beautiful studio and area
for artists to stay and create. I enjoyed the variety of prints in many
different styles. We are in the southern Baja. No one tries to mail from
here to the states. We have been told that all mail goes through Mexico city
and it often takes a very long time to arrive. We once mailed post cards
and they arrived a year later. We often do send things back with friends to
mail. I will not try to send back my year of the rat cards because I do not
have enough stamps for them here and I would not want to ask some one to try
to mail that many items at their local post office.

My rat block is coming along. I have been calling him Templeton. They will
be mailed in the Spring, probably will be finished by Feburary. I have
submitted my name for the next exchange and have been searching out my wood
supply and considering a design. Hopefully my name is on the list. The
exchanges are a great way to try new sizes and new ways to print. I often
find I learn a lot from doing exchange prints. My exchange prints are not
always my best work, some are okay, some not so okay. Some times I am
unhappy witn my paper choices, but I am learning slowly about which papers
work best. Some ot this stuff seems like trial and error. I would encourage
everyone to jump in and do exchanges no matter what level you are as a
printmaker. You will only get better and this is a good way to get there!

Dave, I like your print. I find the composition good, the color contrasts
wonderful.

What a wonderful and ambitious project - The River in Winter is
striking and gives a great feeling of the water's movement - the
simplicity of this composition makes it rather different from the
others in this series so far - do you intend to do more like this?

Dave, the proof of your "River in Winter" print is stunning! (http://
woodblock.com/solitudes/prints.html) The rock in the foreground is
almost photographic, yet there's an abstraction in the overall piece
that's very interesting. The movement is so compelling -- I feel
quite literally pulled into the water -- and I love the rock that's
under the water. Your skills, both carving and printing, really shine
through in this piece.

Hi Everyone,
I've gotten in a bit of trouble with my rat print--I
decided, in a fit of thriftiness, to use some leftover
MDF. It carved OK but when I wet it to get the
hanshita paper off it got sort of fuzzy/fluffy. Also,
after it dried and when I rolled it with some oil
based ink to do a test print, the ink wouldn't adhere
evenly, skipping some larger flat areas. I'd hate to
have to start over. I seem to remember somebody
talking about rubbing it with shellac but only if
using oil based ink. I've decided oil based ink is
the way to go because of the way water affected it so
would it be a good idea to paint the block with
something? Gesso? shellac? linseed oil?

Sand the surface with very fine sandpaper. Dust/clean it well. Then use a lint free cloth to apply thinned shellac. Let dry. Print with oil based ink.

These recommendations are not set in stone, nor derived from some master guru from some oriental culture. They represent my own experience printing with MDF. Your mileage may vary .......

Color: B/W or Color. Color is encouraged, but we love a good b/w image.

Image Size: At least 6” x 8” but no larger than 8.5” x 11”.

off the edge of the paper.

Medium: Woodblock, Linoleum, Serigraph, Lithograph or Intaglio

Paper type: Any archival paper appropriate to your printing method can be used.

Yes! You and me both ... This is the first print I've ever made that
would look much better at a larger scale and seen at a distance, like
over the couch or wherever! It's not really suited at all to the format
that I will be issuing it - tucked away into the back of the book ...

And what a neat series it would make - different flows of water ...
colours ... different rocks ... it would be fun to do!

No idea. I don't really 'intend' to do any of these, in the sense that
they are planned in detail in advance. This series is all about
exploration for me, and I'm as surprised as anybody at what is coming
out!

Please people - don't feel you have to write privately if the comments
are less than 'glowing'! I'm exploring here, and one of the reasons for
posting about my image was to try and get useful comments from people
with more experience on some of these points. I'm a big boy, and
although in my private life I try to remember the motto 'Praise in
public; Criticize in private', this is a printmaker's _forum_, and
critiquing is what we are all about here.

Part of the 'something wrong' with the rock in the foreground is that -
at present - it kind of looks 'pasted in'. It's actually the same rock
that is there in real life, if you compare with the river photo I put
on the RoundTable, but I tried to simplify my work by 'lifting' it up
and out of the water a bit, to avoid the complications of water lapping
partly over it. So it ended up looking too disjointed from the rest of
the image.

Whether or not I can 'fix' this, or just chalk it up to experience and
move on, remains to be seen when I get back to work after the
exhibition ...
